What is a 001 file?

001 files mostly belong to 7-Zip by Igor Pavlov. 001 is the filename extension of the first volume/chunk of a split, or multi-volume archive. A split archive is a single but very large ZIP or RAR file that has been split into smaller files called "chunks" or volumes that have ".0##" filename extension (where "##" represents two integers). The first volume of a split archive has 001 filename extension, the second has 002, the third; 003 etc. This format is often used to store or transfer RAW image files captured with high-end imaging devices. SwiftView, a TIFF, PCL, HPGL viewer and printer saves the first page of a multi-page (TIFF) image archive in a 001 file. Multimedia Fusion, a game development software saves its MFA project file backups in 001, 002 files depending on the number of backups created by a user. Superbase, a database software saves its database index files with 001 to 999 filename extension.
Files with the extension 001 are often also jpg images or pdf documents, but zip compressed archives or medical images such as DICOM are also common. Use the Online 001 File Viewer on this page to find out the file format being used, and to view your 001 file.
