All about CBZ Files
The CBZ file type is primarily associated with CDisplay.
What is a CBZ file?
- Use: CBZ files are used to store comic books or manga in smaller sized archives so that they can be viewed in their original form without loss of quality. CBZ supports formats like PNG, JPEG, BMP and GIF, and archives them to make them easier to view in a comic book form using reader programs.
- Adoption: While CDisplay was the first sequential image viewer to popularize this method, now CBZ files can be read throughout multiple operating systems using different reading utilities. Programs like Calibre and Gonvisor on Windows, Simple Comic on MacOS, FbReader on Android and Comix on Unix based systems enable users to read sequential images in comic book form.
- Nomenclature: Comic book files can be compressed in RAR ZIP TAR and 7Z formats. The compression format is indicated in the filenames of the archives. The last letter in the filename specifies the compressing format used. For example, CBZ files are stored in the ZIP format, while CB7 files use the 7Z format.
How to open CBZ files

CBZ file format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the CBZ files:
The CBZ extension is very commonly used. This CBZ file itself is among the most popular common file types and predominantly uses a uniform format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 95% of all CBZ files use ZIP compression, the CBZ file contains a number of compressed files. Primarily 19 to 150 files are included. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. CBZ files are between 5 MB and 190 MB in size. These files can be linked to book, digital, empire, comics, love, manga, really, volume, horimiya, pyramid and lucaz.
- 3% of all CBZ files are based on the popular RAR file format. RAR is a proprietary archive file format that supports data compression, error correction and file spanning. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The file size is in the range of 15 MB to 130 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as Rar!.
All the rest of the CBZ files (2%) have different formats. The category is batman, kraa, naruto, comic, tomo, generations, boruto, slayer, next or wars. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your CBZ file!
