How to open an MSP file
You need a suitable software like Installer to open an MSP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MSP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MSP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MSP file format:
To find out what program is needed to open MSP files, you need to determine the file format. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below is our analysis of the MSP files:
The MSP file extension is not found very often and is primarily used by a single program. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 70% of all MSP files internally use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This file format is used by previous Microsoft Office programs and other Windows programs and stores the data in complex containers and sections. The Compound Document format is always starting with the bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1. Each MSP file has an application name, which is Windows Installer XML or Microsoft Patch Compiler. There is also a globally unique identifier 000c1086-0000-0000-c000-000000000046. The file contains sections , SummaryInformation, DigitalSignature, MsiDigitalSignatureEx, #TGT_04ToUPG_04 and TGT_04ToUPG_04. The average file size is 100 MB with most files being between 800 KB and 390 MB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. The file name AcrobatDCUpd2000920063.msp is characteristic of these files. Such MSP files store data about acrobat, exchange, office, acro and none.
- 9% of all MSP files are associated with Microsoft Paint bitmap. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. MSP files can be up to 24 KB in size, but are often around 1 KB - 18 KB. The keywords LinS are typical for these files.
All other MSP files (21%) have no consistent format, often, for example, NAME. These files are often connected to export, public, mona or msms. If you want to find out what your MSP file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with MSP files
- Associate the MSP file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open patches. Because only the current version supports the latest MSP file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Installer update.
- To make sure that your MSP file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MSP file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
