All about CGI Files
The CGI file type is primarily associated with Perl.
What is a CGI file?
How to open CGI files
You need a suitable software like Perl to open a CGI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CGI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CGI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert CGI files:
- Perl by Larry Wall
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. CGI files are often referred to as Perl executables because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- FOP (document) by ApacheFOP (short for Formatting Objects Processor) is a Java application that converts XSL (XSLT)-based objects to various document formats including XML and PDF. A PDF document generated by FOP has CGI filename extension sometimes. This file format is classified as Data.
CGI format details:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the CGI files comes to the following conclusion:
The file type with the extension 'CGI' includes different formats for the applicable programs. The file formats most commonly found in CGI files are:
- 30% of all CGI files are using the well-known ELF file format to store the data. ELF is the abbreviation for Executable and Linkable Format and is the standard binary format on Linux and Unix. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. CGI files are between 5 KB and 350 KB in size. The file type is relatively new. The file name status.cgi is typical for these files.
- 15% of all CGI files are based on the popular PDF file format. PDF is short for Portable Document Format, is a file format to present documents, including text formatting and images, in a manner independent of application software, hardware, and operating systems. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. Most of these files are 37 KB to 1 MB in size. The file name viewcontent.cgi is characteristic of these files. Such files are related to webrep.
All other CGI files (55%) have no consistent format, the following 5 formats exist: shell script, HTML and ZIP. These files are often connected to secure, attachment, irislink, barcode, change, config, filter, portal, image, index, query or list. Just click the "Choose your .cgi file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your CGI file is.

a cgi script is a special file format by Larry Wall and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with CGI files
- Associate the CGI file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open scripts. Because only the current version supports the latest CGI file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Larry Wall manufacturer website after an available Perl update.
- To make sure that your CGI file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .CGI file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
