Opening EPS Files
The EPS file type is primarily associated with Illustrator.
What is an EPS file?
How to open EPS files
You need a suitable software like Illustrator to open an EPS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your EPS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a EPS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

EPS file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our examination of the EPS files comes to the following conclusion:
The EPS extension is very commonly used. This EPS file itself is among the most popular common file types and uses a standardized format supported by many programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 65% of all EPS files are Encapsulated PostScript binary files. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view the contents and find segments of text. EPS files can be up to 570 MB in size, but are often around 460 KB - 6 MB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as Title, Adobe Illustrator, %!PS-Adobe-3.1 EPSF-3.0, %%Creator: Adobe, CreationDate, %ADO_DSC_Encoding: MacOS Roman and %ADO_DSC_Encoding: Windows. Such files are related to logo, cmyk, black, shutterstock, vector, white, horizontal, stacked, print and blue.
- 30% of all EPS files are Encapsulated PostScript files. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The files are 18 KB to 4 MB in size, with a median of 350 KB. The keywords Title, BoundingBox, CreationDate, %!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0, %%Creator: Adobe and Adobe Illustrator are typical for these files. Such files are related to figure, cable, dennert, tube, soporte, design and stock.
All the rest of the EPS files (5%) have different formats, often, for example, Mac2OSX, JFIF and PDF. Files like these are sometimes linked to color, icon, logos, partner, primary, quick or gold. If you want to find out which format your EPS file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .eps file to view this image".

an eps image is a special file format by Adobe and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with EPS files
- Associate the EPS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open images. Because only the current version supports the latest EPS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Adobe manufacturer website after an available Illustrator update.
- To make sure that your EPS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .EPS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
