What is a GER file?

GER files mostly belong to GerberView. GER files are primarily used in the production of printed circuit boards (PCBs). They use the RS-274X Gerber format to store data that details copper traces, solder masks, and other board layers.
These files are essential for transferring design information from PCB layout software to manufacturing equipment.

They include drawing commands and aperture definitions for precise fabrication.

They can be opened with dedicated tools like GerberView or Gerbv.

Some GER files also cover special cases, such as Garmin exercise routes or GNSS error models, though these uses are much less common.

How to open a GER file

You need a suitable software like GerberView to open a GER file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GER file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GER file directly in the browser:. • 15% of all GER files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "G04 " at the beginning. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. A typical file size is 17 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: Gerber, FSLAX, Format and begin FILE IDENTIFICATION RECORD. Such files sometimes refer to copper, ground and outline.

All other GER files (65%) have different formats, the following 9 formats exist: Source, FSLAX, tOpS and NHREghUtqNNMaf.
