What is a TMP file?

TMP files mostly belong to Internet Explorer by Microsoft Corporation. TMP file is a temporary file which is created temporarily to store information on user's workstation while user is using that specific software application. Various computer program generates TMP files, usually when that application couldn't allocate sufficient memory for the running task. Though temporary files are supposed to be automatically deleted from the system after user shut down the application, this does not happen in some scenarios. If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). The files contain the following words: ftypmp42, lmvhd, \tkhd, free, isommp42, moov, beam and trak. Examples of file names are zoom_0.mp4.tmp. These files are attributed to audio, only, internet, concept, dthumb, video and movies.

All other TMP files (75%) have different formats, often e.g. DOC, JPG, EXE, GZIP, PDF, JSON, XML, PNG, 7z, RIFF, RAR, HTML, MDMP, GGT, XGGT, wOF, PAGEDU, CMMM, KOG and CART. They are often associated with html, state, download, decbody, local or thumb.
